The passenger compartment will become a space of health, well-being and safety for the occupants, thanks to advanced solutions. New-generation technologies will allow the passenger to interact with the intelligent interior, and also to be informed of the status of the vehicle, its surroundings and the road. Autonomous driving will open up a new horizon of possibilities for a modular and customizable passenger compartment, which will become a space for work, leisure or rest depending on the needs of the passengers at any given moment.
All this will be possible thanks to new technologies that are already beginning to be used in production vehicles:
New functionalities of interior components based on sensors, actuators and displays. Use of sensors inside the vehicle to monitor occupants, extracting information on time of use, fatigue, level of attention by means of eye-tracking sensors, electrocardiogram, electrothermal activity, etc.
Determination of physiological parameters that make it possible to evaluate the users’ sense of well-being and inform the pyrotechnical systems’ control unit of the position and size of the occupants, in order to adapt the vehicle’s safety systems.
Thermal and acoustic comfort: design, development and testing of new acoustic and thermal insulation solutions based on the introduction of new materials and processes in the interior of electric vehicles to meet the new requirements of this type of vehicle.
Interior ergonomics: development of integral solutions for vehicle occupant comfort aimed at optimizing the user experience. Minimization of fatigue during the journey, personalization of the passenger compartment to suit the physical and psychological characteristics of the occupant, improved accessibility to the vehicle and its different systems, and ease of operation.
Advanced seats compatible with a higher degree of vehicle automation (reclining, adaptation for work or entertainment) or that allow the user greater comfort.
Use of new surfaces, materials and transformation processes of thermoplastic materials and composites in vehicle interior elements to respond to new transportation needs such as electrification, automation or mobility as a service. And this always is done taking into account the circular economy, the cycle time and the economic viability of the solutions.
Breakthrough interior design for autonomous and electric vehicle architectures. For example, new, smaller and more ergonomic steering wheel geometries. They have integrated sensors that provide feedback on the driver’s status.
Smaller intelligent instrument panels that provide greater passenger comfort with more free space to move around. These designs will involve an adaptation or repositioning of the airbags, which in turn will free up other spaces where screens with real-time information will be located.
Panoramic sunroofs have also evolved and now the most advanced ones allow for adjusting the level of light entering the interior thanks to the PDLC intelligent liquid crystal technology. This allows you to switch from a completely transparent glass to an opaque one, regulating the light in the environment and improving the thermal comfort of the passenger compartment.
Management of auxiliary elements of the vehicle through gesture control. The increasing monitoring of the passengers will make possible to know their movements. Thanks to a correct interpretation of them, combined with vocal commands, safe handling of the auxiliary elements of the vehicle can be achieved without having to take your eyes off the road and minimizing the time in which the hands are removed from the steering wheel.
